Cloth nappies have come a very long way since the days of using terry towelling squares! The modern versions are very easy to care for.
These instructions are in line with recommendations from the Australian Nappy Association:
– if necessary remove solids and dispose of in toilet or bin
(To make removing solids easier you can use liners. You can also consider attaching a nappy sprayer to your toilet system.)
– Give every nappy a quick hand rinse under the laundry tap before storing in a dry nappy bucket. This will minimise staining, cut down on smell and stop potential fabric damage from acidic wee.
– within 24-48 hours wash your nappies in you machine first with a warm pre-rinse cycle. This gets rid of any excess urine or soiling before the wash cycle. Then through a normal/long wash cycle up to 60°C, with the amount of detergent recommended by the detergent manufacturer for your load size and water level. Washing detergents that are enzyme/softener/whitener free are recommended to prolong the longevity of the fabrics and as a gentler option for babies skin. You can find cloth nappy washing detergents here.
– Line dry for best results or tumble dry according to manufacturer’s directions.
Please find attached a printable laundering instruction sheet. It might be helpful to print it out and pop on your laundry wall until you get the hang of washing your cloth nappies.
Before you commence using your cloth nappies you will need to prewash them at least 3 times, in order to increase their absorbency. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions before use.
It is important to remember not to use petroleum based nappy creams. Mod Bots stock fantastic nappy balms and creams suitable for use on your baby while wearing cloth nappies.
